35 Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers

This section includes the chemical transformations of synthetic high polymers: synthesis and reactions of polymers, related monomers, and polymer models; reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and mechanisms of these transformations. Studies of polymers prepared for a specific use or of a specific class are contained in the section encompassing the use or class: e.g., polypeptides in Section 34; plastics in Sections 37 or 38; elastomers in Section 39; fibers in Section 40; coatings in Section 42.

36 Physical Properties of Synthetic High Polymers

This section includes the physical properties and physical interactions of synthetic high polymers. Physical properties of polymers for a specific use or of a specific class are contained in the section encompassing the use or class: e.g., polypeptides in Section 34; plastics in Section 37 or 38; elastomers in Section 39; fibers in Section 40; coatings in Section 42.

37 Plastics Manufacture and Processing

This section includes preparation, manufacture, testing, processing, and composition of resins and related compounds for use in plastics manufacture. Resins of a specific class or for a specific use are included in the section encompassing the class or use: e.g., coatings in Section 42; fibers in Section 40; elastomeric resins in Section 39; and naval stores in Section 43. End-product fabrication of plastics is included in Section 38.

38 Plastics Fabrication and Uses

This section includes end-product fabrication of plastics, fabricating processes or techniques of chemical and chemical engineering interest, and plastics reclamation. Fabrication of resins of some specific classes or for some specific uses are included in the section encompassing the class or use: e.g., elastomers are placed in Section 39; fibers in Section 40; waxes in Section 45; prosthetic devices in Section 63.

39 Synthetic Elastomers and Natural Rubber

This section includes analysis, preparation, manufacture, testing, processing, and composition of synthetic elastomers and natural rubber and the chemicals used in their manufacture. Also included is chemical engineering related to production of synthetic elastomers and rubber chemicals and to the fabrication of tires and preparation of their components. Uses of elastomers are included in the sections encompassing the use: e.g., coatings in Section 42; prosthetic devices in Section 63.

40 Textiles and Fibers

This section includes analysis, preparation, manufacture, testing, processing, and composition of natural and synthetic fibers and the chemicals used in their manufacture and processing. Fibers for use as reinforcing agents are included in the appropriate section encompassing the material being reinforced. Dye synthesis and color-structure relationship are included in Section 41. Dry cleaning and laundering are included in Section 46. Preparation and processing of inorganic fibrous materials by methods unrelated to textile processing are included in the appropriate inorganic section.

41 Dyes, Organic Pigments, Fluorescent Brighteners, and Photographic Sensitizers.

This section covers the manufacture, processing, and properties of natural and synthetic dyes and organic pigments, synthesis of fluorescent brighteners, photographic color couplers, photographic dyes, sensitizers for photographic emulsions, and color formers for copying processes. Uses of dyes are included in the sections encompassing the use: e.g., dyeing of textiles in Section 40; dyeing of leather in Section 45; dyeing of plastics in Section 37; photographic emulsion preparation in Section 74; dyes used in cosmetic formulations in Section 62.

42 Coatings, Inks, and Related Products

This section includes the manufacture and use of decorative, finishing, and protective coatings and the materials used in their manufacture. Coatings of a specific class or for a specific use are included in the section encompassing the class or use: e.g., fiber coatings in Section 40; paper coatings in Section 43; vitreous coatings in Section 57; cosmetic enamels in Section 62; dental coatings in Section 63; electrode oxide coatings in Section 72; photographic coatings in Section 74.

43 Cellulose, Lignin, Paper, and Other Wood Products

This section includes the chemistry and chemical processing of wood and other raw materials for the manufacture of cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose, and other wood-related chemical products (e.g., naval stores); and the chemistry of pulps, paper manufacture, paper products, spent liquors, cellulose derivatives, and viscose. Textile uses of cellulose or its derivatives appear in Section 40. Biochemical studies on trees appear in Section 11. Microbiology of pulp and paper is included in Section 10. Paper substitutes that are plastic films appear in Section 38.

44 Industrial Carbohydrates

This section includes the nonenzymic manufacture and processing and nonfood uses of commercial noncellulosic carbohydrates (e.g., cane and beet sugars, molasses, starches, gums, mucilages, and pectins). Sugars, molasses, honey, and starches as foods and enzymic processes for industrial carbohydrate food production appear in Section 17. Noncommercial studies of noncellulosic carbohydrates appear in Section 33. Fermentation processes for industrial carbohydrates are included in Section 16. Commercial cellulosic carbohydrates are placed in Section 43.

45 Industrial Organic Chemicals, Leather, Fats, and Waxes

This section includes manufacture, processing, and applications of commodity organic chemicals, including use as chemical feedstocks; tanning of furs, skins, and hides; processing of tanning materials and products of tanning operations; processing of inedible or unspecified animal and vegetable fats and ester oils; and the chemistry of synthetic glycerides and waxes. Organic chemicals of a specific class or for a specific use are included in the section encompassing the class or use: e.g., synthesis of organic chemicals in the appropriate synthetic organic section.

46 Surface-Active Agents and Detergents

This section includes the chemistry of cleaning compositions and their components (e.g., soaps, syndets, detergent builders, dry cleaning solvents) and nonspecific uses of surface-active agents. Specific uses of surface-active agents are included in the sections encompassing the use: e.g., polyurethane foam formulations in Section 37; ore-flotation agents in Section 54; cosmetic formulations in Section 62; chemical cleaning of metals in Sections 55 or 56; chemical cleaning of textiles as part of the manufacturing process in Section 40. Physical chemistry of surface-active agents appears in Section 66.
